MuniRem® › What it treats
Reactive aluminum
What Reactive aluminum is, and how we evaluate it with MuniRem®.
What it is
Fine aluminum powder is added to explosives (H-6, tritonal) and some energetic mixes to boost blast. Loose powder can react with water and ignite.
How MuniRem® treats it
MuniRem lists reactive aluminum among materials it treats. In its answers to us, MuniRem said that in its process the aluminum is passivated and forms aluminum sulfate (alum).
- MuniRem arrives as a dry powder. Crews mix it into contaminated soil or sludge, or dissolve it in water to spray, pour or soak surfaces.
- The reagent's sulfur chemistry passivates the aluminum surface.
- The aluminum ends up as aluminum sulfate (alum).
- An EPA-certified laboratory tests the treated material before any disposal decision.
This material is evaluated case by case with a treatability study before any full-scale work.
What it becomes
Aluminum sulfate (alum).
Where it's found
Aluminized explosive residues on equipment and in sludge.
