MuniRem® › What it treats
Perchlorate in soil and water
What Perchlorate in soil and water is, and how MuniRem® treats it, in plain language.
What it is
Perchlorate is an oxidizer used in rocket motors, flares and fireworks. It dissolves easily and spreads in groundwater, and it can affect the thyroid.
How MuniRem® treats it
Perchlorate is treated biologically with MuniRem's SAMNAS process, not with the MuniRem chemical reagent. At a former Army plant, nutrients were tilled into soil and SAMNAS solution was infiltrated down. That met the site goals for perchlorate and explosives within 10 to 12 months. MuniRem reports perchlorate degraded to non-detect, leaving chloride.
- Bacteria-rich nutrients are tilled into the contaminated soil.
- SAMNAS solution is infiltrated into deeper soil.
- Native bacteria use perchlorate in place of oxygen. It steps down to chlorate, chlorite and finally chloride.
- Bi-monthly sampling tracks progress, and labs measure perchlorate, chlorate, chlorite and chloride.
What it becomes
Chloride, Water, Oxygen.
Where it's found
Range soils, OB/OD areas and groundwater.
