MuniRem® › What it treats

NBs / NDMA

What NBs / NDMA is, and how we evaluate it with MuniRem®.

What it is

NBs are nitrobenzenes, such as trinitrobenzene (TNB), found with TNT contamination. NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine) is a probable human carcinogen linked to rocket fuel and some industrial processes. It is a groundwater concern at very low levels.

How MuniRem® treats it

MuniRem lists NBs, TNB and NDMA as compounds it treats. No test data or end products for these specific compounds were found.

  1. MuniRem arrives as a dry powder. Crews mix it into contaminated soil or sludge, or dissolve it in water to spray, pour or soak surfaces.
  2. Adding water starts the reaction. The reagent releases sulfoxyl free radicals, a short-lived reactive form of sulfur.
  3. The radicals strip oxygen-rich nitro groups off the explosive molecule. That removes the part that stores explosive energy.
  4. An EPA-certified laboratory tests the treated material before any disposal decision.
This material is evaluated case by case with a treatability study before any full-scale work.

What it becomes

Nitrogen gas, Formate & acetate, Carbon dioxide & water, Sulfate (from the reagent).

Where it's found

TNT plant soils and groundwater, and rocket-fuel sites.
