Metals: As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and more
What Metals: As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and more is, and how MuniRem® treats it, in plain language.
What it is
Heavy metals such as arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury come from munitions, primers, paints and industrial work. They do not break down. Their risk depends on how easily they dissolve and leach into water.
How MuniRem® treats it
MuniRem binds toxic metals into insoluble metal sulfides instead of destroying them. Field leach tests (TCLP) at Army sites and for a commercial client showed drops of about 70% to 97% for lead, barium, arsenic and chromium.
- MuniRem is mixed into the soil or waste, and water is added.
- Thiosulfate from the reagent reacts with dissolved metal.
- The metal forms an insoluble metal sulfide, the same type of mineral as fool's gold (iron sulfide).
- A TCLP leach test confirms that less metal leaches out.
What it becomes
Insoluble metal sulfides, Elemental sulfur, Sulfate.
Where it's found
Ranges, demilitarization sludge, baghouse dust and plant soils.
