What it is
Black powder is the oldest explosive, a mix of potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulfur. It is used in fuses, igniters, fireworks and older munitions. It ignites easily from sparks, friction or static.
How MuniRem® treats it
MuniRem lists black powder among explosives proven in lab tests, field trials or projects, and as a material it treats in manufacturing clean-up. No black-powder-specific data or end products were found.
- Tell us the material, amount and where it is.
- A sample is bench-tested in a treatability study.
- An EPA-certified laboratory analyzes the results.
- Full-scale work is planned only if the results support it.
This material is evaluated case by case with a treatability study before any full-scale work.
What it becomes
Determined by treatability study.
Where it's found
Pyrotechnic and ammunition plants, magazines and historic munitions.
